A reliable source of packet data for monitoring solutions
Network analysis starts with getting actionable data reliably and securely. While there are many ways to capture packets on a live network, there are often serious downsides, such as packet loss, out-of-order packets, or the use of devices that can be used in man-in-the-middle attacks. This directly impacts the quality of analysis and the network's security. A best practice here is to deploy network TAPs (test access points) as the key method for accessing network traffic. TAPs are hardware devices deployed at key locations between two points in network infrastructure, such as routers, switches, or firewalls, where data access is needed for monitoring or troubleshooting purposes. In a virtual environment, a virtual TAP, or vTAP, is installed on the virtualized server, providing full access and visibility into the east-west traffic flows.
Purpose-built network TAPs are more reliable than switch port analyzer (SPAN) ports, particularly at high data rates. Network TAPs offer significant advantages over the use of SPAN ports to monitor the network, such as providing access to packets of all sizes and types at wire speed, delivering an exact copy of all traffic to the monitoring ports, and isolating monitoring devices from the network to mitigate the risk of data breaches.

Secure TAPs
Organizations such as governments, financial institutions, hospitals, and industrial complexes rely heavily on their networks. This means network security is at the top of the list for SecOps and NetOps teams working on the architecture. An integral part of network security is supplying your monitoring tools with the highest quality data possible. Security won't be up to par if the data source can't be relied upon. Network TAPs are a preferred solution for reliable and secure network data access as purpose-built, dedicated tools.

The following measures have been taken to secure Profitap network TAPs:
- Physical isolation from the operational network on Copper TAPs, which acts as a data diode
- Optical data diode for Fiber TAPs prevents light insertion from the monitor ports
- Secured firmware implemented on active TAPs
- Security seals prevent opening and tampering with the devices
- Randomized patterns used on seals and packaging to ensure secured logistics

Secured firmware
Secured firmware installed on active TAPs cannot be read or altered by 3rd parties, ensuring the safe operation of the devices.

Data diode
All Secure TAPs act as data diodes.
For copper TAPs, this means they are physically isolated from the operational network.
For Fiber TAPs, an optical data diode prevents light insertion from the monitor ports into the operational network.

Security seals
Tamper-evident security seals covering the screw head make unnoticed opening and tampering with the devices impossible.
The randomized paint pattern on the seals helps to verify and ensure that the seals have not been replaced.

Secured packaging
Each package containing secured data access products is also provided with a security seal with a randomized pattern.

Lossless aggregation
Conventional Aggregation TAP solutions often feature output ports with the same speed as the network links. This causes oversubscription on the output port of the TAP, causing valuable packets to be lost. Many high throughput devices like Network Packet Brokers feature ports designed for 40/100 Gbps operation. Replication TAPs
For situations where you want to monitor a single, critical network segment using several tools, a Replication TAP is what you need. A replication TAP sends copies of the network traffic to multiple monitoring tools simultaneously.
That crucial network segment's traffic could then be monitored by an intrusion detection system (IDS), recorded for later forensic examination, captured for future use, or analyzed for performance issues. This type of TAP is useful when a critical segment needs to be monitored by an array of security and compliance tools simultaneously.
